Parenting grown children these days

My little girl has become an independent professional, self-employed and doing very well as an entrepreneur. My three boys have made their marks in their chosen fields and are living away from home. Me? teaching and hoping to teach up to 2015 until such time when Migs Zubiri will author a bill that allows any teacher who has taught for more than 10 years whether private or public to apply for retirement when he/she reaches 60. Migs, where are you? Back to the issue at hand . . . how do you go on with your parenting role when all your children have grown?

In my case, I do so, by staying as their confidante or just a "listening ear" or travel companion. I do not impose my will anymore. Even to start a quarrel, I sense it won't work anymore. When they do not want to come home I do not insist. These days, I have accepted the inevitable- that they can live without me. Still I always pray for their safety. In fact when news about accidents happen in the city where they are, my heart skips a beat. I look up to God and plead for their safety. Parenting, for me, when the children are grown takes the form of "letting them go" yet entrusting them to God, the Father of us all.

Did you hear Cristine's interview?

ANC cited Actress Cristine Reyes appealed for help at the height of typhoon "Ondoy" Saturday, September 26. Then Sunday came, September 27 and early this morning, she and her family were rescued. This tells us the significance of having a cell phone! Futhermore, make sure your cell phone is charged and re-charged before it gets "low bat".

While listening to Cristine, it hit me that she was not acting but re-living a real life incident. She was telling the whole world she needed help and that her loved ones and neighbors were in the same dilemma. To Cristine, you deserve an award- a recognition- for being so human and humane. You rescued many others even as you were rescuing yourself and your loved ones. Once you are over this crisis, please write in your blog, all the innermost feelings you kept hidden in your heart. If you do not have a blogspot, the time has come for you to have one. Cristine, God loves you!
