Sooner or later, Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines, has to face the inevitable queries head on: How far has Malaybalay progressed? What can it show to the world in terms of its economic development, peace and order situation, social responsibilities, ecumenical initiatives, educational pursuits, political moves?
Is Malaybalay ready for 2010?
From the perspective of a Malaybalayan, Malaybalay is ready but not fully ready. Why?
Economic standpoint: For a very long time, we seem to equate Malaybalay as the straight line called Fortich Street. It is high time to expand centers of business ventures other than those located in Fortich Street. Please, no more brownouts for what business ever thrives with all the unannounced brownouts and imagine: on and off, on and off (three or four in a row!)
Peace and Order: While Malaybalayans already accepted the big leap that the place has taken, it is still with pain that we accept horrible news that a number of residents have become victims of cruelty, theft, petty crimes and violence.
Social Responsibilities:Typical of any city is the presence of street children so Malaybalay has them too. In addition, we see women who are not "sound in mind" go around: they carry their belongings all the time, talking to themselves or to no one in particular and on occasions, strike a quarrel to anybody who makes the mistake of saying something to her. What agency is in-charge of these cases?
Ecumenical Initiatives: Malaybalay is a place where people profess various faiths: Catholic, Protestant, Muslims, Seventh Day Adventists and other affiliations. If there are initiatives that are ecumenical, how do we know what these are? Can we have more symposia to know our priests, our pastors, our imams.
Educational pursuits: What scholarships are open to those who really need it? We hear of many so-called scholars because of "connections". Like the summer jobs which go not necessarily to those who need it most but because the office in-charge of it has friends who in turn have friends. As they say: What are friends for? So are the scholarhips given only to their friends?
Political moves: Ah, these are exciting times, what with the elections coming, May 2010 and with the automation of the election process.They say we expect many changes in leadership. The constituents who are voters want information about these candidates. We also hope ample preparations are in place to protect the sanctity of our ballots.
So, is Malaybalay ready for 2010? The answer remains to be seen . . .
