Why do we praise to high heavens persons who have already died and cannot hear it?

"Death comes like a thief in the night" so we are caught off guard when someone we know very well is announced dead when a while ago we just spoke with him or her. During these moments we are left dumbfounded and fearful for ourselves for we are all in the same realm.

Now that the person is dead, we hear, even the harshest critic, praise to high heavens their respect and adulation for the deceased. Others speak of superlative qualities that we could not believe they had to wait for the concerned to die before such accolade can be uttered. Are these praises for the dead or are meant for somebody else?

Perhaps in the future, we will be more honest and transparent and if possible say it while the person is alive- to hear it and be happy you are kind enough to let him/her hear it. When this happens, the world becomes a better place to live in!
