Once upon a time, this blogger was once of those who was glued watching tv when Gloria Diaz was declared Miss Universe way back l965. That was also the time when man landed on the moon! From then on, the Philippines has always made good in pageants whether Miss International or Miss Universe. So there is enough reason to go deeper why the filipina stands out and why Elderly Blues & Blows congratulates all of them.
Researching on where is the Miss Universe Contest anchored upon, Google informs us that the corporate history of the said contest focuses on using the pageant as a way of increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS and breast and ovarian cancers. So when we watched the 2011 Miss Universe Contest, it was interesting to note that the top five went to the following:Leila Lopes, Miss Angola, Olesya Stefanko, Miss Ukraine, Priscila Machado, Miss Brazil, SHAMCEY SUPSUP, MISS PHILIPPINES, Luo Zilin, Miss China.
Would you believe there was unanimous decision that we would put off the tv if Miss Philippines would not make it to top l5. So when number 1-13 were called and only two were left who would make it to top 15, there was united prayer and shout: Miss Philippines! and indeed number 14 went to Shamcey. So the tv went on playing. Then top five and so another wish, Miss Philippines please and in the first few names, Shamcey made it. There was no doubt in our minds she would make it in top four so we waited and though we did not fully agree with the judges, second runner up or fourth place it had to be.
Elderly Blues & Blows now asks: Were the questions representative of what awareness of HIV/AIDS and breast and ovarian cancers is all about? Sad to say the questions were not. If Lea Salonga was telling us the truth that the questions were already formulated and therefore they were not the ones who prepared it, perhaps it is time to go back to the former procedure of giving only one questions and allow every finalist to answer it one by one. This question should definitely center on the awareness of the beautiful ladies regarding HIV/AIDS, breast and ovarian cancers.
In the meantime, Congratulations Shamcey!
